31 Oct Amy Campi
Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor McKinney, TX
Amy Campi has over 10 years experience in the mental and behavioral health field. She has worked extensively with substance abuse, women’s issues, and the criminal justice population. Amy firmly believes that all clients have the ability to change their maladaptive behaviors and obtain the results they desire from therapy. She meets the client where they are in their change process and frequently reevaluates the client’s therapeutic goals.
She finds a direct approach to therapy valuable with these populations, using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), and Reality Therapy. Amy is certified to facilitate Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT), an evidence-based CBT program designed for the substance abusing criminal justice population. Results of nearly 200 published studies have found significantly lower recidivism rates up to 20 years post-treatment with MRT.
While working as an adult probation officer, she was confronted with the obstacles in the criminal justice system for those who have mental health issues and or substance use disorders. This inspired Amy to return to school for her master’s degree so she could pursue her passion to truly help this population. She is especially passionate about women’s issues within this subgroup.
Throughout her time working with the female population in jails and probation, she found that women experience unique challenges and barriers to treatment. Some of these barriers include pregnancy, single motherhood, patterns of substance use, reasons for using substances and complex trauma. Many of the women that Amy worked with as a probation officer were sent to prison or jail as a consequence for ongoing substance use which was a symptom of untreated trauma.
Amy’s background includes employment as a primary therapist at an Intensive Outpatient Program for adults, conducting adolescent and adult substance abuse assessments for non-profit mental health agencies, and working at a locked psychiatric facility for high risk adolescents who were too mentally ill to be placed in the juvenile detention center.
Amy is the current CEU Coordinator for the Dallas chapter of Texas Association of Addiction Professionals (TAAP). Amy is an active member of the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC).
