My counseling experience began as a bereavement volunteer at Heart to Heart Hospice while in graduate school. As a bereavement volunteer I would follow up with families who lost loved ones in the care of the hospice agency. I provided grief counseling to family members for a year after the death of their loved one. My first practicum experience afforded me the opportunity to work on an Inpatient Psychiatric Unit with patients who struggled with addictions, depression and suicidal ideation. I provided individual counseling and group counseling in the inpatient setting. My next placement was at a Juvenile Detention Center working with adolescents from ages 10 -19 who were detained for various reasons. I facilitated both individual sessions and group sessions with detainees. My role was to help them to develop resiliency and effective coping skills that would serve them well beyond detention. I moved on to work in private practice focusing on couples counseling. I have helped over 175 couples work through relationship challenges, including assisting couples recover from an affair, blended family stressors, sexual desire differences, multicultural families dynamics, life transitions, parenting, and pre-marital counseling as a Prepare/Enrich facilitator.
I believe that life events are not the cause of distress, but rather our thoughts about those events. I use a collaborative eclectic approach to help clients find solutions they feel great about and solutions that are catalysts to healing.
As a professional I continue to learn and grow by participating in professional associations, attending trainings and challenging myself to learn new things.
