Life has been called ‘the school of hard knocks,” and people have identified themselves as ‘coming up the hard way.” Life has a way of teaching you things you won’t find in books.
A few lessons about life that I can appreciate now but didn’t care for learning at the time are, life can be hard, life isn’t fair and sometimes can be senseless. And yet it can be enjoyable, rewarding and adventurous. Stress and difficulty don’t have to be the destination. I guess I would say I’m a realistic optimist.
Without asking you I know you’ve experienced similar lessons, and now you confront something that is burdensome, that you can’t shake, that you can’t get over or perhaps you simply want to take a new look at life and purpose and are looking for someone to help you sort out, make sense of things and get back to living.
I bring a breadth of life experience to our time together. I’m a son of a career military father, a husband of forty-three years, father to two and now grandfather to five, two of which are twin boys. I’ve traveled internationally, enjoyed a long and sometimes turbulent ministry, served as a fire chaplain and operated a small business just before 9/11.
I’ve been privileged to serve the severely mentally ill, the intellectual and developmentally disabled, foster kids and adoptive families, dementia patients, launching my counseling career in in-patient addictions treatment.
I have earned a BA in Bible, MA in Religious Studies and MA in clinical mental health counseling.
I approach our time together with the focus on you, your needs and goals, utilizing different interventions as needed, with my goal being your empowerment and resilience to the degree that circumstances don’t define you or limit you.
When I’m not in session, a few things I enjoy are wooden spoon carving, hiking and biking, helping my wife plant flowers and of course, helping my grandkids stay out of mischief—most of the time.
