Individual Counseling

Individual Counseling in McKinney, TX One on One Therapy for Adults

For more than 37 years, Counseling and Consulting Associates of North Texas has provided individual counseling in McKinney, TX for adults carrying anxiety, depression, grief, trauma or simply the weight of a hard season. One hour, one licensed counselor, and a room where what you say stays. In person on Heritage Drive, or by telehealth anywhere in Texas.

What Is Individual Counseling?

Individual counseling is private, one on one therapy between you and a licensed counselor. No partner in the room, no family members, no group. Just the space to say the thing out loud that you have been carrying alone, and a trained professional whose only job in that hour is to help you understand it and work through it.

Some people come to us in crisis. Others come because life is technically fine and something still feels off. Both are good reasons. Through psychotherapy, individuals learn practical, durable tools for handling what they are facing, and most tell us the relief starts earlier than they expected, often in the first few sessions, simply from having somewhere to put it.

What Is Individual Counseling

What Individual Therapy Helps With

Our counselors work with adults across the full range of concerns, and you do not need a diagnosis to begin.

Persistent heaviness, loss of interest, exhaustion that sleep does not fix.

Grief Loss and Life After Diagnosis Counseling

Grief, Loss and Life After Diagnosis

Bereavement, chronic illness, cancer support, and the losses no one thinks to acknowledge.

Trauma and PTSD Counseling

Trauma and PTSD

Past abuse, assault, accidents, first responder experience and the ways trauma follows people into ordinary days.

Life Transitions Career and Identity Counseling

Life Transitions, Career and Identity

Divorce, relocation, career change, empty nest, retirement, faith questions, LGBTQ+ support and personal growth.

Self Esteem Burnout and Anger Counseling

Self Esteem, Burnout and Anger

Perfectionism, people pleasing, anger management, impulsivity and the quiet belief that you are not enough.

Individualized Mental Health Treatment, Not a Script

Counseling individuals well means starting from the person rather than the manual. In your first session your counselor asks what brought you in, what you have already tried and what a good outcome would look like to you, then builds an individualized treatment plan around that. Most adults we see get a blend of approaches rather than one method applied rigidly.

Person Centered Counseling

The therapeutic relationship itself is the tool. Non-judgmental, led by what matters to you.

Cognitive and Behavioral Approaches

Practical work on the thought patterns and habits keeping a problem in place.

EMDR and Exposure Therapy

Structured, evidence based methods for trauma, phobias and panic.

Sand Tray Therapy and Hypnotherapy for Adults

For when talking has stalled. Both are available to adults here, not only to children.

Individual Counseling for Marriage and Relationship Concerns

One of the most common calls we get: the relationship is struggling and the other person will not come in. You do not have to wait for them. Individual marriage counseling is real, legitimate work, and it changes relationships more often than people expect, because one partner shifting how they respond changes the pattern both people are stuck in.

Individual counseling for marriage is also the right choice when you are deciding whether to stay, processing an affair, recovering from a divorce, or working on something you would rather sort out privately before bringing it to your spouse. Many clients here do individual and couple counseling in parallel, sometimes with different counselors on our team, so both tracks stay honest.

Fit matters more than any credential on the wall, which is why we have 20+ providers instead of a handful. Our individual therapists include licensed professional counselors, licensed clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists and licensed psychologists. Several specialize in trauma and EMDR, one is a bilingual counselor offering sessions in English and Spanish, and evening appointments are available. Tell our intake team what is going on and they will name two or three counselors who fit and who are currently accepting new clients.

One on One Therapy Plus Psychiatry, Under One Roof

Sometimes talk therapy alone is enough. Sometimes medication makes the therapy possible. Our board certified psychiatric providers work in this same office, so if you and your counselor decide medication is worth exploring, the referral is a walk down the hall rather than a new search, and the two sides of your care stay coordinated.

FAQ

Individual Counseling Questions, Answered

What Is the Difference Between Individual Therapy and Couples Counseling?

In individual therapy the client is you, and the work centers on your patterns, history and goals. In couples counseling the relationship is the client. Many people do both. If you are unsure which you need, our intake team will help you decide on the phone.

Match on three things: the concern you want help with, practical fit such as insurance, location and evening availability, and whether the person feels easy to talk to. The third one only reveals itself in session, so give it two or three appointments before deciding, and never feel obligated to stay with a counselor who is not the right fit.

Yes. Individual and marriage counseling are not either-or. Working on your own responses, boundaries and clarity often shifts a relationship dynamic even when only one person is in the room, and it prepares you for joint sessions later if your partner becomes willing.

It depends on what you bring. A specific issue such as a phobia or a work transition may resolve in six to twelve sessions. Long-standing trauma or depression usually takes longer. Your counselor will discuss a rough timeframe early on and revisit it with you rather than leaving it open ended.

Yes. What you share is protected by law and by HIPAA. The narrow exceptions, which your counselor will explain in your first session, involve imminent danger to yourself or someone else, or suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult.

Yes. Secure telehealth sessions are available for adults anywhere in Texas, with the same counselors you would see in the office.

We are in network with several major plans and offer out of network and self pay options. Coverage changes often, so call 972.542.8144 and our staff will verify your benefits before your first appointment.

Your insurance card, photo ID and completed intake forms. Nothing else. You do not need a prepared speech or a clear explanation of the problem. Working that out is what the hour is for.
